        Leaking tiled shower

# A leaking tiled shower needs the right next step.

Water outside the shower, a stain below or recurring damage around the tile can point to different causes. Start by separating a plumbing or glass issue from a problem within the tiled shower assembly.

## If water is moving beyond the shower, pause its use.

A ceiling stain, soft drywall, active dripping or water near electrical fixtures deserves prompt attention. Keep people away from a damaged ceiling or wet electrical area and contact the appropriate qualified professional. A visible stain shows where water appeared; it does not prove where the leak began.

      01
### Stop adding water

Do not keep testing the shower if water is actively reaching another room, a ceiling or a wall cavity.

02
### Record what happened

Photograph the whole shower, the visible symptom and the room or ceiling below. Note when the water appears and what was running.

03
### Choose the first trade carefully

A dripping fixture, supply line, trap or drain connection belongs with a licensed plumber. Tile-assembly concerns may need a tile installer once plumbing and glass causes are separated.

      What you can see

## These signs can justify a closer look at the whole shower.

No single sign proves that the waterproofing has failed. Look at the pattern, timing and nearby components together.

      01
### Water or staining below

Discolouration, bubbling paint, soft drywall or dripping on the ceiling or wall beneath the bathroom.

02
### Recurring movement at joints

Grout that repeatedly cracks, loose tile or movement near a curb, corner, niche, bench or floor transition.

03
### Moisture outside the enclosure

Water at the threshold, beside the glass, around the curb or on the bathroom floor after shower use.

04
### Persistent odour or dampness

A musty odour, recurring damp area or swelling beside the shower can indicate concealed moisture that needs qualified investigation.

      Photos have limits

## Photos help organize the next conversation. They do not diagnose a concealed leak.

Send both context and close detail. A tight photo of one grout line rarely explains how the drain, curb, glass and waterproofing work together.

### Photos can show

- The full shower shape and every tiled wall
- The drain, floor, curb or threshold and glass edge
- Niches, benches, corners, penetrations and visible joints
- Where staining, swelling, cracks or loose tile can be seen
- The ceiling, wall or floor where water appeared

### Photos cannot confirm

- Whether a concealed waterproofing layer is continuous
- The condition of a drain or plumbing connection behind finishes
- The extent of hidden moisture, mould or damaged materials
- The condition of framing or subfloor below the tile
- The exact cause without the right investigation

      The waterproofing question

## New grout, caulk or sealer may not solve a waterproofing failure.

Tile and grout are finish materials; they are not the waterproofing system for a tiled shower. The assembly behind the tile is what manages water at the floor, walls, corners, penetrations and drain.

Fresh caulk, grout or sealer may address a surface joint or maintenance issue. It cannot restore a concealed waterproofing layer if that layer is incomplete or has failed. Not every leak means a rebuild—the source has to be established first.

      Choose the right trade

## The right scope starts with the right trade.

Mallet Tile can estimate tile installation and waterproofing work for a tiled-shower rebuild when the requested scope is the shower assembly—not a leaking fixture, pipe, drain connection, glass seal, mould cleanup or structural correction.

### A Mallet Tile estimate can define

- The existing tiled surfaces and the shower you want to rebuild
- Preparation and waterproofing installation that belong in the written tile scope
- Tile layout around the drain, curb or threshold, niches, benches, edges and glass interfaces
- Known exclusions and other-trade responsibilities that must be settled before scheduling

Mallet Tile does not provide plumbing, shower-glass, mould-remediation, structural-engineering or emergency water-damage services.

### Another qualified specialist may be needed for

#### Plumbing

Valves, supply piping, traps, drain connections and other plumbing components.

#### Shower glass

Door alignment, sweeps, seals and water escaping at the enclosure.

#### Mould or water damage

Large, hidden, recurring or contaminated areas that need qualified assessment and remediation.

#### Structure

Damaged framing, subfloor or other structural conditions outside the tile-installation scope.

      Prepare the estimate

## Send enough detail to estimate the tile work honestly.

You do not need to know the cause before contacting Mallet Tile. Share what you can observe and any findings already provided by another trade.

[Start your estimate](#estimate-title)[Tell us about your project](/contact-us/)

- Project address and the best contact details
- Wide photos of the bathroom and every side of the shower
- Close photos of the drain, floor, curb or threshold, niches, benches, glass edges and visible damage
- Photos of the ceiling, wall or floor where water appeared
- Approximate shower dimensions and the changes you want in a rebuild
- When the symptom appears and which fixtures or areas were wet
- Any plumber, glass, mould or structural findings already available
- The selected tile, if known, or the size and material you are considering

      How the project moves

## From a worrying symptom to a defined installation scope.

Each step reduces uncertainty without pretending a photo can settle what is hidden behind the tile.

- 01
### Share the starting information

Send the address, photos, visible symptoms, approximate dimensions and any findings from other trades.

- 02
### Separate the responsibilities

Clarify what belongs to plumbing, glass, mould, structure and the tiled shower assembly.

- 03
### Define the rebuild scope

Confirm the tiled surfaces, preparation, waterproofing, layout details and known exclusions for the written estimate.

- 04
### Coordinate before installation

Resolve open measurements and other-trade work before the installation sequence is scheduled.

      A homeowner’s starting point

## A homeowner’s starting point can be this simple.

One customer described the concern they brought to Mallet Tile in a five-star Google review:

“My upstairs bathroom was leaking into my ceiling below.”

**JesseScotts**Five-star Google reviewA review can describe the starting concern; it does not identify the cause or the exact work your shower needs.

    Common questions

## Questions homeowners ask about a leaking tiled shower.

These answers keep the tile scope clear without guessing at a concealed cause.

Can you tell from photos why my tiled shower is leaking?
Not reliably. Photos can show the shower layout, visible damage and where water appeared, but they cannot confirm a concealed membrane, drain connection, pipe, framing or hidden moisture. They are useful for choosing the next questions and deciding which trade may need to investigate.

Does cracked grout mean the waterproofing has failed?
Not by itself. Cracked grout can come from movement, an unsuitable joint detail or another condition. Repeated cracking, loose tile, dampness or water outside the shower deserves a broader look, but the visible crack alone does not establish the cause.

Will new caulk, grout or sealer stop the leak?
It depends on the source. Surface work may help a maintenance joint or enclosure detail, but it does not recreate a concealed waterproofing system. If the assembly behind the tile is incomplete or failed, surface sealing alone will not make it continuous.

Should I call a plumber or a tile installer first?
Start with a licensed plumber when the symptom points to a fixture, valve, supply pipe, trap or drain connection. A tile installer becomes relevant when plumbing and glass causes have been separated and the tiled shower assembly may need to be rebuilt. Some projects need both trades to define their responsibilities.

Does Mallet Tile handle mould or structural damage?
No. Mould remediation, structural engineering and emergency water-damage work are outside Mallet Tile’s tile-installation scope. Those conditions need the appropriate qualified specialist before or alongside a shower rebuild.

Can Mallet Tile estimate a shower rebuild from photos?
Photos are a useful first step, but the written estimate needs enough information to define the tiled surfaces, preparation, waterproofing, layout details and known exclusions. Measurements, further investigation or findings from another trade may still be needed.

Can I use the project cost calculator for a leaking shower?
Use the calculator only as an early installation-cost planning tool. It cannot diagnose a leak or account for concealed conditions. Share the actual shower details and any specialist findings before relying on a written rebuild estimate.
