Toronto and GTA installation planning

Tile installation cost calculator

Calculate a starting installation cost from the room, tiled area, tile format and existing conditions, then use the guide below to understand what changes the written estimate.

Project estimate

Start with what you are tiling.

Choose the closest project type first. The next questions cover the approximate tiled area and material so the initial estimate reflects more than a single square-foot number.

Step 1 of 4
Type of Project

The short answer

Tile installation cost is not determined by square footage alone.

A tile installation labour cost per square foot is useful only when the rooms being compared have a similar base, tile format, layout and level of preparation. A clear floor over a sound base and a shower with demolition, waterproofing, slope, niches and glass should not be priced from one universal rate.

The calculator turns the details you know now into a starting estimate. The written estimate then replaces assumptions with the actual room, selected tile, access conditions and work that connects to the tiled surface.

See every cost input

Cost by project type

The room changes what the installer has to plan.

Use square footage as the measurement, then add the details that make that particular installation easier or more involved.

01

Bathroom and shower tile

Separate the floor, shower walls, ceiling and other tiled walls. Demolition, waterproofing, drainage, slopes, niches, benches, glass lines and plumbing locations can all change the installation scope.

02

Floor tile

Measure the installed floor area, then identify concrete or subfloor, existing finishes, movement, flatness, heated-floor plans, doorways and every transition to another finish.

03

Kitchen backsplash

Backsplash area may be small, but outlets, corners, cabinet lines, a range hood, pattern alignment and exposed edges can create more cutting and layout work per square foot.

04

Fireplace tile

Measure the surround and hearth separately. Material thickness, corners, the wall above the opening, floor transitions and the fireplace manufacturer's clearances all need to be settled before installation.

What changes the estimate

Six inputs explain more than a single rate.

The calculator asks for the information that can be known early. Photos and room review settle the conditions that cannot be confirmed on a form.

01

Installed area

Use the area that will receive tile, not the quantity of boxes you plan to order. Floors, walls, ceilings, surrounds and hearths should be measured separately.

02

Base preparation

Existing finishes, damage, movement, moisture, flatness and the type of base affect removal and preparation before tile can be set.

03

Tile format and pattern

Dimensions, thickness, variation, pattern, orientation and difficult cuts affect handling, layout and setting time.

04

Wet-area assembly

Waterproofing, drainage, slope, curbs, niches, benches, ceilings and glass lines have to work together around the tile layout.

05

Edges and transitions

Outside corners, trim, mitres, doorways, stairs, cabinets and adjoining floors determine where visible cuts and finished edges land.

06

Access and coordination

Parking, elevators, work-hour rules, material movement and the sequence of plumbing, electrical, cabinetry or glass work can change the plan.

Measure the installed area

Give the calculator the surface, not just the room size.

A bathroom's floor area is not its shower-wall area. Measure each tiled surface separately and keep the numbers approximate when the final layout is not settled.

Calculate project cost
Floor

Length × width

Measure each floor zone in feet. Split L-shaped rooms into rectangles, calculate each one and add them together.

Walls

Width × tiled height

Calculate each wall face separately. Add shower walls, feature walls, tub surrounds and ceilings only where tile is planned.

Openings

Keep cutting in mind

A window or niche may reduce installed area but add layout, edges and cuts. If you are unsure, enter the full surface and show it in the photos.

Tile order

Do not add waste to installed area

The calculator needs the surface being tiled. Tile order quantities and allowance for cuts should follow the selected material and final layout.

Same area, different scope

Why two 60-square-foot projects can produce different estimates.

This comparison is about work involved, not a published price range.

60 sq. ft. entry floor

A direct floor installation

  • One horizontal surface
  • Standard tile layout
  • Sound base with limited preparation
  • Open access and two transitions

60 sq. ft. shower walls

A tiled wet-area assembly

  • Three walls and changes of plane
  • Waterproofing and drainage coordination
  • Niche, plumbing openings and glass line
  • More edges, cuts and layout decisions

How this resource is built

The calculator follows the questions used to scope installation work.

It begins with project type, installed area and tile format, then asks about the existing base, demolition and installation extras that apply to the selected room. It is designed for Mallet Tile's installation work in Toronto and the GTA; it is not a tile-retail price list or an international market index.

The result is a starting estimate, not a fixed final price. The written estimate should identify the room, included tile work, assumptions, base preparation and any separate work by other trades.

Tile installation cost questions

Answers before you calculate.

These answers cover the cost questions homeowners and builders most often need to settle before requesting a written estimate.

How much does tile installation cost per square foot in Toronto?

There is no dependable universal rate for every tile project. Installed area is only the starting measurement. Base preparation, demolition, tile format, layout, waterproofing, edges, access and coordination can make two projects with the same square footage require very different work. Use the calculator for a starting estimate tied to the actual project type.

Is tile installation labour priced the same for every tile size?

No. Tile dimensions, thickness, pattern, variation and handling affect layout and setting time. Large-format pieces, porcelain slabs, mosaics and small-format sheets each create different preparation, cutting and alignment requirements.

Does the calculator include the tile I need to buy?

No. Mallet Tile provides tile installation and does not sell tile. Enter the installed surface area and closest tile format. Confirm tile order quantities with the selected product and final layout rather than treating the calculator result as a retail tile budget.

Why can a tiled shower cost more than a floor with the same area?

A shower can combine waterproofing, drainage, slope, changes of plane, plumbing openings, niches, benches, ceilings and glass lines. A floor may have fewer connected details. The exact comparison still depends on demolition, the base and the selected tile.

Does removing existing tile change the installation estimate?

Yes. Existing finishes and the condition beneath them affect the removal and base preparation that may be needed. Hidden conditions cannot be confirmed until the room is inspected or opened, so the written estimate should state the assumptions used.

Can I calculate a cost before choosing the tile?

Yes. Choose the closest tile format for the starting estimate. Send the exact product, dimensions, thickness and pattern once selected so layout, preparation and handling can be reviewed against the room.

What measurements do I need for a bathroom or shower?

Measure the bathroom floor, each shower wall, the shower floor, tub surround, ceiling and any other tiled wall separately. Show windows, niches, benches, curbs, doorways and glass lines in photos because they can add edges and cuts even when they reduce the tiled area.

Does condo access affect tile installation cost?

Not automatically, but parking, elevator bookings, loading routes, work-hour rules and debris handling can affect the time and sequence needed to complete the installation. Share the building requirements before scheduling.

How accurate is the tile installation cost calculator?

It is an early planning estimate based on the answers entered. Exact measurements, room conditions, access, the selected tile and connected work still need to be checked before the written scope and final price are confirmed.

Can I use this calculator outside Toronto and the GTA?

The measurement and scope questions can help organize a tile project anywhere, but the estimate is designed for Mallet Tile installation work in Toronto and the GTA. It should not be treated as an international price index or a local price for another market.

After the on-screen estimate

Turn the number into a room-specific scope.

Save the result, then send the address, photos, measurements and tile details. We can identify assumptions, separate connected work and confirm what belongs in the written estimate before scheduling.
