What goes into your tile installation?

A shower, a hallway and a backsplash need different work. Hereโ€™s what matters when youโ€™re deciding what to have tiled.

Bathrooms and showers

A tiled shower needs waterproofing behind the finish. The drain, wall-to-floor junctions, bench and niche need to work together. Tell us whether youโ€™re starting with an empty room or replacing an existing shower; you donโ€™t need to settle the layout or grout first.

Bathroom and shower installation

Floors and floor heating

The base, doorways and height of adjoining floors affect the installation. If youโ€™d like a heated floor, mention it so the heating system and electrical work can be considered. A bathroom floor can be a project on its ownโ€”you donโ€™t need to renovate the whole room.

Kitchen backsplashes

Cabinets, counters, outlets and exposed ends determine where a backsplash finishes and where the cuts are visible. You can start with a simple idea of the look you want. We confirm the layout and finishing details after booking.

Large-format tile and fireplaces

Tile dimensions affect handling, cuts and base preparation. On a fireplace, the layout also affects how the pattern or veining meets across the surround. If youโ€™ve chosen a tile, its size or product link helps us understand the work.

Getting started is simple.

Tile details that fit your shower

After booking, we confirm the layout around the drain, niche, bench and glass with you. Tile size and the room dimensions affect where the joints and cuts sit, so those details are considered together before installation.

What affects the cost of tile installation?

The area is only part of the cost. Two rooms of the same size can need different preparation and finishing work.

The work your room needs

Removing an existing finish, preparing the base and waterproofing a shower are different jobs. Niches, exposed edges, floor transitions, larger tiles and a heating system can also affect the work. Your preliminary estimate sets out the tile installation included, so you can compare more than a price per square foot.

A starting cost, then an estimate

Use the calculator if you have measurements and want a preliminary project cost. If youโ€™re unsure about the area or what needs to be included, tell us about the room or call. Weโ€™ll ask for another detail if we need it; grout and layout choices can wait until after booking.

Local project information

Tile work in Richmond Hill: useful things to know.

Let us know if your project is in a condo or another managed property. Check the buildingโ€™s requirements and the official renovation information for any other work involved.

01

What the city lists as permit-free work

Richmond Hill does not require a building permit for work such as cosmetic renovations, replacing a vanity, or replacing tile in the same location. The City of Richmond Hill's own guidance still requires the project to follow its zoning by-laws.

02

Which fees attach to the drains behind a new shower

Where a shower or tub relocation pulls in new plumbing, the city's published application fees include a $158.40 minimum plumbing fee, $196.61 for sanitary and storm drains, and $28.40 per added fixture on an addition or alteration.

03

How long review actually takes

The city's service charter commits to a completeness check on any permit application within 2 business days, then 10 business days for house permits, 15 for small building permits, 20 for large, and 30 for complex ones.

04

Why TRCA and site alteration appear on infill projects

Residential applications can require Conservation Authority approval, a site alteration permit, or planning approval before a building permit is issued. In new subdivisions the city also requires a registered M plan and municipal addresses first.

05

What stays with the homeowner on site

The permit holder must print the permit card and drawings and keep them on the construction site, and must notify the city at each housing inspection stage. Those steps sit with the owner, not with the tile crew.

Questions homeowners ask before booking tile work.

Answers about tile installation, preparation and planning.

What should I send for a tile installation estimate in Richmond Hill?

Tell us what you want tiled, your city or town, the approximate area and your timing. Add the tile size if you already know it, and mention whether removal or floor warming is part of the project. You can email photos if you have them; they are helpful, not required to start.

Does a tile project in Richmond Hill need a building permit?

For most tile replacement in the same location, Richmond Hill does not require a building permit, and the city still expects the work to follow its zoning by-laws. A permit question usually arrives when the project moves plumbing, changes walls or structure, alters the way a room is used, or pulls in a site alteration or Conservation Authority approval. Electrical work follows a separate path through the Electrical Safety Authority. Use the city's own guidance for the complete project at the address.

What building or condominium details matter for tile work in Richmond Hill?

Tell us if the project is in a condominium or managed building. Mention any requirements for elevator use, loading, work hours or common-area protection that affect your project.

How long does a Richmond Hill permit review take?

The city's service charter sets out the commitments: any application is checked for completeness within 2 business days, then a complete house permit is reviewed within 10 business days, a small building permit within 15, a large one within 20 and a complex one within 30. Those are review targets for a permit application, not a schedule for tile installation.
